The Story behind Rembrandt - Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee
This oil-on-canvas masterpiece was painted by Dutch Golden Age painter Rembrandt van Rijn in 1633. The painting depicts a biblical story of Jesus calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee and in fact its Rembrandt's only seascape. The painting used to be in the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum but it was stolen in 1990 by two thieves disguised as police officers and its whereabouts still remain unknown. Along with the Christ in The Storm on the Sea of Galilee 12 other works of art were stolen in the theft, which is considered to be the biggest art theft in the U.S. history.
