The Wave off Kanagawa is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai probably made in late 1831 during the Edo period of Japanese history. The print depicts three boats moving through a storm-tossed sea, with a large wave forming a spiral in the centre and Mount Fuji visible in the background.

The beautiful dark blue pigment used in this painting,  is called Prussian Blue. It was a new material at the time, imported from England through China.

The wave is about to strike the boats as if it were an enormous monster, one which seems to symbolise the irresistible force of nature and the weakness of human beings.
